US reports first case of new mpox variant

A first case of the clade I mpox strain was confirmed in California. The individual had traveled from eastern Africa and experienced mild symptoms. This strain, primarily spreading through sexual contact, is endemic in parts of Africa and has been reported in several other countries. While the Congo’s situation is stabilizing, millions of vaccines are still needed.
