Assam clears bill on nikah, now aims to end child marriages by 2026
The Assam legislative assembly approved a bill that mandates the compulsory registration of Muslim marriages and divorces with government officials. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the adherence to Muslim personal law and the aim to eradicate child marriage by 2026. The bill also repeals the colonial-era Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935.
