India signs treaty to conserve marine biodiversity in high seas
India has signed the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, or ‘High Seas Treaty,’ to strengthen its strategic presence beyond its Exclusive Economic Zone. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar signed it at the UN General Assembly. The treaty focuses on sustainable use of marine biodiversity, equitable resource sharing, environmental impact assessments, and capacity-building for marine technology transfer.
